PSAI Mexico is Involved in the Research and Conservation of Underwater Caves
Underwater caves are one of the last frontiers in diving and exploration, but also one of the least known ecosystems. For seven years, the marine biologist, and PSAI instructor Fernando Calderón Gutiérrez in collaboration with the PSAI trainer German Yañez has been conducting research in the underwater caves of Cozumel Island to better understand the unique biodiversity on these caves. The discovery of new species, unique ecological processes and the assessment of extinction risk of cave fauna, are just some of the exciting results. This summer, in collaboration with PSAI Mexico, Protec, and local cave diver instructors, the research project is expanding to the Riviera Maya.
