PSAI’s First Cave Survey and Cartography Program Training Conducted for PSAI Instructors from China
Mid-January 2014 saw the first group to be trained in PSAI’s Cave Survey & Cartography Program. The group of PSAI Instructors, along with PSAI China Licensee: Gallup Lee, came halfway around the world to participate. A part of the PSAI Explorer Team – Team Wuji has a lot of virgin caves to explore and map in the People’s Republic of China.
The concept of the having this course available for PSAI was originally conceived during meetings between PSAI Executive Chairman Gary Taylor and key members of the PSAI China Team during a three year period and some conversations dating back to 2007. Gary brought both his experience in underwater cave survey and cartography stemming back to the early 1970’s, as well as materials he developed for teaching this course for the U.S. Deep Diving Exploration & Survey Team and through NASDS, as well as IANTD, to come up with one of the most comprehensive courses in the in cave diving community. By adapting new methodologies and techniques, this course turned out to be a big hit.
The group form PSAI China not only had a great time, they were the photographers (and photo subjects) for the upcoming new PSAI Underwater Cave Survey & Cartography, which is now in the final pre-publication stages.
The group was given the challenge for their final survey and map of the Peacock III “Catacomb Area” – as Gary likes to designate it.
For their first maps, Team Wuji did an exceptional job.
