PSAI China Truk Lagoon Wreck Diving Trip
In September 2015, PSAI China instructor Gallup Lee (ITE-85) led a wreck diving team to the world famous wreck divers’ heaven—Truk Lagoon. During their week-long stay, the group of 7 PSAI technical divers from Hong Kong and Shanghai explored ten of the several dozen sunken Japanese warships in the pristine waters of Truk Lagoon, all of which were destroyed in World War II during the Operation Hailstone attack by U.S. Navy. Among them are the famous deep wreck San Francisco Maru, Kensho Maru, Heian Maru, Shinkoku Maru, Yamagiri Maru, Houki Maru and many others. Most of the wrecks are merchant ships that served as transport ships during WWII, some of them sit upright underwater and many of them are very accessible for penetrations. The divers were awed by the voluminous ammunitions, bombs, mines, oil barrels, fighter plane parts, as well as trucks and bulldozers found inside the cargo holds, as well as the tanks and anti-aircraft guns found on the decks. They were also mesmerized by the multi-storey engine rooms where many of the machinery, controls and tools were still in place. When the team left Truk Lagoon, the vivid memories of the wrecks were implanted deep in their minds, reminding them always of the magnitude of human destruction and the solemn significance of world peace.
